Can You Imagine Life With No Books?
By: Samantha (Coulston Elementary 5th Grade)
Do you know something, something I dread?
Not a book in the world, not one to be read.
There wouldn't be poets, or authors, or more,
Just as if reading were thrown out the door.
There wouldn't be anything, nothing to know,
My life would be filled with sorrow and woe.
Without our books we know and love,
Our lives would be dull, until we go up above.
Life wouldn't be good, great, or grand,
Without anything to read, or even understand.
For you could not determine your life,
Without something to read, something to like.
So put some books into your life's plan,
And read something good whenever you can.

Can You Imagine Life With No Books?
By: Ben (Coulston Elementary 5th Grade)
Last night I awoke, something popped into my head,
I had an awful thought of a world that I dread.
I thought of a world without cozy nooks,
No wonderful places for us to read books.
A world without suspense, or adventure, or horror,
No little kids able to research an explorer.
No knowledge of anything without books we adore
No fun, no entertainment without books anymore.
Just think of your life with no books you can read,
You would feel just like a tiger without any feed.
I know all these thoughts are all in my head
So I'll create no more thoughts of the world that I dread.

Enrichment Activities

3..2..1..BLAST OFF!

The Challenger Mission, sponsored by AE, was an enrichment opportunity for all 5th grade classes. Interested students completed a job application and submitted referrals in order to participate in the fieldtrip. Several class sessions were held which prepared the "astronauts" for their trip. During the two-hour fieldtrip simulation, the students assembled and launched a probe, which collected information from the tail of a Comet. The future "astronauts" conducted experiments, collected and analyzed data, and made decisions that determined the outcome of the mission. From the expressions of the students and Comments from the Chaperoning Teachers, the mission was a success!

Comments from the Chaperoning Teachers:

Mrs. Wilkinson, 5th grade Hendricks: We had such an awesome time. It was a great problem solving experience for all of the students. Honestly, it was the best field trip that I have ever been on. The students were so excited and had a blast!

Mrs. Slusser, 5th grade Loper: It was excellent! The kids loved it! It was a great learning experience. The students were using the skills they have learned at school and didn't even realize it. It truly teaches problem-solving skills, teamwork, and learning through inquiry.

Mr. Hopkins, 5th grade Coulston: The mission was excellent! I could not have asked for a better opportunity to see kids from different classes work together to attain a goal. The students did a wonderful job and I was very pleased!
