College
Admission Exams: SAT-I,
SAT-II, and ACT Exams
Four-year
colleges and many 2-year colleges require that students take a college
admission exam. The score
obtained from this exam is a requirement of the college application
process. The nationally recognized tests are the SAT-I and the ACT.
Many scholarship programs also require either an SAT-I or ACT
score. The SAT-I is an
aptitude test covering English, writing, and mathematics abilities.
The ACT is an achievement test covering English, math, reading, and
science reasoning skills. Students
may take either or both exams as many times as they choose.
Both tests are offered on Saturdays throughout the year (national
test dates) and last approximately 4 hours.
The scores are reported differently for each test.
The SAT-I scores each section on a scale of 200-800 for a composite
score of 600-2400 (add the three sets of scores to achieve the composite
score). Many colleges will
take the best combination of scores, even if they are from different test
dates. The ACT results are on
a scale of 1-36 for each section. The
four sections are then averaged to create a composite score ranging from
1-36. Many colleges in states
outside of Indiana may prefer and even require the ACT.
The
SAT-II is an advanced testing program over specific subjects.
A student may register to take 1, 2, or 3 subject tests on a given
test date. Students cannot
take the SAT-I and the SAT-II on the same date.
