Online Bear Trails

This online booklet was developed for all those "Bear Backers" who have difficulty at one time or another "Finding Our Foes".  As a favor to you, we have compiled directions to most of the athletic facilities that host our sporting events.

Since there are numerous paths to take in pursuit of our foes, we have tried to select the ways that are easiest to explain in writing, without the aid of a detailed map.  At times we have offered an alternative route; after several trips to these facilities, we are confident that you will find new and better paths.  Feel free to share your suggestions with the Shelbyville Athletic Booster Club; we will incorporate your ideas into our next edition of "Bear Trails".

Anderson High School  - 60-minute estimated drive time

4610 S Madison Ave.

Take Hwy 9 north through Greenfield; turn right on Hwy 67 (State  Police Post on corner) cross I-69 and curve right onto 53rd Road at the south edge of Anderson (well-marked);  turn left (north) on Madison (1st stoplight); school is two blocks on right.

Memorial Field (baseball and football facilities for AHS).

Take Hwy 9 north through Greenfield; turn right on Hwy 67  (State Police Post on Corner); cross I-69 and curve right onto 53rd Road at the south edge of Anderson (well-marked); turn left (north) on Madison (1st stoplight); stay on Madison, go past AHS, go under a viaduct.  Memorial Field is just past the next stop light on the left, behind a Union Hall #662.

Take S.R. 9 North through Greenfield; turn right on Hwy 9/67  (at Old State Police Post & Restaurant); follow Hwy 9/67 across I-69 (which becomes North Business 9) to Madison Ave. - start counting stoplights with the light at the north exit of I-69 and Madison Avenue is the 7th stop light after you go over I-69.   Turn left on Madison Ave., go north to the 1st stoplight (14th St.) and turn right.  Go to the second street on the left (John St.) and turn left.

Take I-74 east to Batesville/Oldenburg exit (Hwy 229); turn right (south) at exit stop; turn right  (west) at Hwy 46 (1st stoplight); turn left at Mitchell Ave.; pass Margaret Mary Hospital; turn right on Columbus Ave.  School is at the corner of Mitchell & Columbus on the left.

Beech Grove High School - 30-minute estimated drive time

Take Hwy 44 east to Rushville, this will bring you in on 1st. St.; stay on 1st Street to the stoplight at Main Street; turn left (north) onto Main Street (this is also known as Hwy 3); go north on Main Street past the hospital; turn left (west) onto 16th Street (McDonalds's and Shell are at this corner); go past elementary school; turn right (north) on Park Road; school is on left up a hill.  

Ben Davis High School - 60-minute estimated drive time

Take I-74 west to 465 South; to west 10th street exit; go to Girls School Rd; turn right, the school is on left about 1/4 mile.

Take Hwy 44 west to 144 to 37 south turn left; stay on 37 until you see a sign that says Bloomington North School, you will be on North Kinser Pike go about 1 1/2 miles to school on right. 

 Bloomington South High School - 1 hr. 30-minute estimated drive time

Take 44 west thru Franklin turns into 144; stay on 144 until it turns into Hwy 37 turn left.  Take the College Ave. exit.  Stay on College Ave., it will eventually become Walnut St. go thru town, school is on the left side of the road.

Take Hwy 44 west to I-65 to Hwy 46 west exit at Columbus; go west (right) on Hwy 46 to the stoplight at the edge of Nashville;  (NOTE: As you approach Nashville, you will see the high school on the right but you cannot enter the school from Hwy 46); turn right at the stop light; turn right again immediately after the Bonded Gas Station; high school is straight ahead.

Take Hwy 44 west to I-65; go north (right) on I-65 to the Whiteland exit.  (1st exit after entering interstate); at exit stop sign, turn left (west); go about 2 miles; after crossing railroad tracks, turn into Whiteland High School and go around behind school (north); middle school is on the back lot of the high school.

Columbus Central Middle School - 45-minute estimated drive time

Take Hwy 9 south through Hope; turn right (west) on Hwy 46; turn left on Taylor Road (between Amoco and Shell stations); cross Hwy 31 (now road is called 10th St.); continue west on 10th (it will turn into 11th after crossing Central); cross California, Chestnut and Sycamore; then turn left on Pearl St. The school is on the right corner of 7th and Pearl.  (To get to their track and field facility, follow 11th St. all the way across town; it will curve left (south); turn right  (west) onto Hwy 11; track will be on the right immediately after the turn).

Columbus East High School - 45-minute estimated drive time

Columbus Soccer Center - 45-minute estimated drive time

St Rd. 9 thru Hope, turn right on Nortonburg Pike, turn left on Marr Road to Poshard Dr.  Stay to right, road will fork out to left or right left is Marr Rd., right turns into Poshard.  Go to Central Ave. turn left and soccer field will be right after you turn.

Take Hwy 44 east through Rushville (follow Hwy 44 east signs); as you go up a long steep hill into Connersville you will see a sign on the left pointing to the right for Connersville Area Vocational School; turn right at this sign onto Gray Road; take the first left street (Ranch Road); this goes through a nice housing area, then you will see the high school on the right; turn right onto the drive in front of school; most athletic facilities are to the left as you approach high school.

Take Hwy 44 east to Rushville; (you're now on 1st St.); follow 1st St.  (NOT 44) to stoplight; turn right (south onto Hwys 3 and 52); curve left onto Hwy 52 split; go east to Brookville; go to stop sign in Brookville where Hwy 101 intersects; go left (northeast) on 101; cross a bridge in a short distance; in about 1/2 mile there is a sign pointing to Brookville High School and Oxford Pike; curve right onto this road; come to a 4-way stop and school is on the right; there is a sign pointing to the school.

Take Hwy 44 west to I-65 South to I-265 East exit; follow to Hwy 62 South for about 2 miles; turn left at McDonald's (Allison Lane), school is about 1/2 mile on right.  (Note: to go back home, retrace path and when you reach the point where you entered Charlestown/New Albany Pike, go straight ahead and curve slightly to the right, this will take you onto the entrance ramp for I-65 north.)

Take Hwy 9 south to US 31 south; (Note: stay on Hwy 9 through the intersection of Hwy 46); turn left (south) on to US 31 south; get in left lane immediately; turn left at the exit stoplight, which is Hwy 7; go through Scipio and Queensville and into North Vernon; street goes up over a viaduct (bridge over railroad tracks); turn right at 2nd stoplight after viaduct; this will be Hwy 50 south; road winds around through a residential area; school is on the left about 1 mile from where you turned onto Hwy 50.

Alternate Route-Take Hwy 44 west through Franklin; stay right and on 144(DON'T turn left onto Hwy 44); go to Hwy 37; turn right at junction of Hwy 252 at edge of Martinsville; turn left onto John Wooden Drive (immediately after hospital); follow drive through housing addition; at stop sign turn left and then right into school complex.

Milan High School  -    1 Hr. 45-minute estimated drive time

Take I-74 east to Batesville exit, turn right go to the first stop light turn left on 46; go past Hilenbrand's Factory and turn right on 129    about 10 miles to the first 4-way stop; turn left on 350; go about 5 miles to 101 at the first 4 way stop turn right; go about 1/4 mile; the high school is on the left.

Alternate Route-Take I-74 to Sunman exit, follow windy 101 through Sunman and into Milan to 4 way stop where 350 intersects 101; stay on 101 through 4 way stop; Milan High School is about 1/4 mile on the left. (travel through the intersection).

Mooresville High School  - 45-minute estimated drive time

Take Hwy 44 west through Franklin; cross US 31; to past the hospital on left and straight ahead staying on Hwy 144; (Don't turn left on to 44); stay on Hwy 144, crossing Hwy 37 and Hwy 67; after crossing Hwy 67 you are entering Mooresville; turn right onto N. Indiana Street; when you get to a 4 way stop, school is on the left.
