CORE 40 DIPLOMAS
  • Three Core 40 Diplomas are now offered by the State of Indiana. These diplomas require specific college preparatory coursework and prepare students to attend 2 and 4-year colleges and universities.
  • All students will start on a Core 40 diploma track and may opt for the general diploma track after their freshman year.

How do I earn a
Core 40 Diploma?

  • Complete at least 42 high school credits
  • Complete courses in specific areas
  • Maintain an overall C (2.0) grade point average
  • Pass the End-of-Course Assessments in Algebra I and English 10

CORE 40 DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS


  • English/Language Arts
    • 8 credits
  • Mathematics
    • 6-8 credits
    • Must take the following courses: Algebra I, Geometry,  Algebra II, or advanced math classes
  • Social Studies
    • 6 credits as follows:
    • 2 in World History, 2 in U.S. History, 1 in U.S. Government, 1 in Economics


  • Science
    • 6 credits in science from the courses below:
    • 2 in Biology I;
    • 2 in Integrated Chem./Physics Chemistry I, or Physics
    • 2 additional Core 40 science credits
  • Physical Education
    • 2 credits
  • Health
    • 1 credit

CORE 40 with TECHNICAL HONORS DIPLOMA
  • This is a new diploma which began with the Class of 2010 that prepares students for college, technical school, an apprenticeship, or the workforce.
  • Students can earn both a Technical Honors diploma and an Academic Honors diploma.

How do I earn a Technical Honors Diploma?
  • Complete requirements for the Core 40 diploma
  • Complete at least 47 high school credits
  • Earn at least a C- in each course and maintain an overall B (3.0) grade point average
  • Pass the End-of-Course Assessments in Algebra I and English 10

How do I earn a Technical Honors Diploma?
  • Additional Requirements
  • Complete a career-technical program resulting in 8-10 directed elective credits.
  • Complete two of the following (including A or B):
  • A.  Work Keys
  • B.  Technical dual credit courses resulting in 6       college credits
  • C.  Cooperative Education
  • D.  An industry-based work experience
  • E.  A state-approved industry recognized      certification

CORE 40 with ACADEMIC HONORS DIPLOMA
  • This is the most rigorous high school diploma offered by the State of Indiana. It is best suited for students who plan to attend a 4-year college or university after high school.

How do I earn an Academic Honors Diploma?
  • Complete requirements for the Core 40 diploma plus additional coursework
  • Complete at least 47 high school credits
  • Earn at least a C- in each course and maintain an overall B (3.0) grade point average
  • Pass the End-of-Course Assessments in Algebra I and English 10

How do I earn an Academic Honors Diploma?
  • Additional Required Coursework
  • Earn 2 additional Math credits
  • Earn 6-8 credits in World Languages
  • Earn 2 Fine Arts credits
  • Complete one of the following:
  • - Complete 2 AP courses and corresponding AP exams
  • - Earn 6 credits in a dual high school/college course
  • - Complete 1 AP course & exam plus 3 credits in a dual    high school/college course
  • - Score 1200 or higher on SAT (math & critical reading)
  • - Score a 26 composite on ACT

GENERAL DIPLOMA
  • The General Diploma prepares students for employment, the military, technical schools, and community colleges. This diploma requires 42 credits.

WHAT ARE ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES?

  • Courses designated as AP are the most challenging, college preparatory courses offered at SHS
  • These courses follow a national AP curriculum, as designated by the College Board
  • Due to their academic rigor, these courses are weighted
  • Students have the opportunity to take an AP exam, which may lead to college credit (depends on individual college requirements)

University Early Release for Post-Secondary Credit
  • A senior Honors Diploma student who lacks only a few credits and has exhausted coursework in a department will be allowed to enroll for a portion of the school day at SHS.  The other part of the school day would be available to attend a class on a college campus.

  • Credit is earned by the satisfactory completion of a semester’s work. One credit is given for each class per semester.

Academic Recognition & Awards
  • Honor Roll
  • Superior Honor Roll = A GPA of 3.67 or higher with no grade below a B-
  • Honor Roll = A GPA of 2.67 to 3.66 with no grade below a C-


  • Academic Letter “S”
  • Awarded to students who achieve All A’s at the end of the first semester and third nine weeks grading period


  • Bears’ Best Awards
  • Each curricular department will award a certificate each nine weeks and a trophy annually to an outstanding student in the department


  • National Honor Society
  • Second semester juniors as well as seniors with a 3.5 GPA are invited to apply for membership in the National Honor Society.  Other requirements include providing proof of participation in service and leadership activities.

  • All semester grades for Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, & Senior years
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Attendance record
  • Standardized test scores: ACT, SAT, PLAN & PSAT
  • Colleges and scholarship committees utilize transcripts as a “snap shot” of student’s progress

Post-Secondary Planning During the Freshman Year
  • Remember that while graduation is 4 years away, freshman grades are still very important.  Get off to a good start!
  • Participate in extracurricular and community service activities.  Start a résumé of these activities.
  • Complete a career interest inventory like the one at www.learnmoreindiana.org
  • Consider taking the PLAN test, which will also give good career planning advice.
  • Complete a College Cost Estimator, which will be sent home with your student at some point during their freshman year.
  • Start searching for scholarships

21st Century Scholars Program
  • Students may receive up to a full tuition scholarship to attend an Indiana college
  • Students must enroll before the end of 8th grade
  • Program is based on family income…must be eligible for free or reduced lunch program
  • Student must maintain a “C” (2.0) average in high school, apply for federal financial aid in 12th grade, and remain drug and alcohol free

  • Maintain passing grades in five classes at the end of each nine-week grading period
