Requirements of Blue River Career Programs

Shelbyville High School works in cooperation with Blue River Career Center to offer students skills training in specialized areas. Typically, students will enter the vocational school during their junior year and receive two years of training; however, students may take a first year program their senior year. Participating students attend four classes at the high school and take a three period block class at BRCC. This program will allow students to earn up to6 credits per year at BRCC. Students who excel in a program their junior year may be able to "co-op " during their senior year. Industrial Cooperative Education (ICE) or "co-op" allows students to work at a paid job site (usually in the field of program training) and receive secondary education credit at the same time. Students will have the opportunity in their sophomore year to visit Blue River Career Center and observe a presentation about the different career programs before the scheduling process begins.

Students who are interested in attending a career program will have to complete an application and an interview. Both Blue River Career Center and Shelbyville High School must agree that the student is appropriate for the career program. To be eligible to apply for the career programs for his/her junior year, a student must complete a minimum of 18 credits by the end of the sophomore year and have all freshman required courses completed. Juniors wishing to enroll in ICE should complete the application process as well.
