2008 "DIVE INTO READING" & "DIVE INTO CHILI" FESTIVITIES

Congratulations to the approximately 350 Shelbyville Central Schools students in first through eighth grade who recently participated in back to school festivities celebrating their commitment to meeting their summer reading goal.  The "Dive Into Reading" summer reading program is held in partnership with the Shelby County Shelbyville Public Library.  We are most appreciative of the support that we received from the Library as they welcomed our students in to their busy summer schedule through the months of June and July.

On Thursday, August 14th, first through fifth grade students were rewarded with a three hour-pool party at the Meridian Park family Aquatic Center while Middle School students shared in an afternoon of fun at the Shelbyville Boys Club.  On Friday, September 19th the festivities continued as these students were recognized during the varsity football game between the SHS Golden Bears and the Greenfield-Central Pirates.

Congratulations to our sixth-ranked Golden Bears as they set a school record of fourteen straight regular-season games won in a row!

The winners of footballs autographed by the SHS Football Team were:

Rylie Stephens, Coulston Elementary School

Brianna Ayers, Hendricks Elementary School

Aubrey Norton, Loper Elementary School

Braden Cole, Shelbyville Middle School

Additional activities on the evening of the 19th, included the "Dive Into Chili" cook-off sponsored by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.  Nine participating businesses provided a crock pot of chili as they battled for the title of Best Chili of Shelby County.  The proceeds of the chili cook-off raised over $400, which was shared between the SHS Athletic Booster and 90% Reading Goal initiative.  Thank you to our Chamber of Commerce for their continued support of the "Dive Into Reading" program.

Earsel Smith, SCS Buildings and Grounds Director, donated an enormous pumpkin grown this summer in his garden in Blue Ridge towards the evening's activities.  Golden Bear fans of all ages could guess the weight of the pumpkin for just a quarter with the proceeds benefiting the 90% Reading Goal. The closest guess received a winter sports pass donated by the SHS Athletic Department.  Winners were Charles Kocher and Ken Berger both guessing 135 pounds with the actual weight coming in at 138 pounds!  Thank you to Natalie Renwick's SHS art students who took on the project of decorating the massive pumpkin.

Julie Metz, Executive Director of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, presents Scott Spahr from
Charles Major Manor the 2008 Best Chili of Shelby County trophy.
