In an effort to promote reading
at home and celebrate Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday along
with Presidents' Day, the "Stars and Stripes" reading event
was created by the 90% Reading Goal Committee. In January,
"Stars and Stripes" Parent/Student Involvement Activities
(Reading Prompts) were sent home with all the elementary
students in kindergarten through grade 5. The
students who participated in the activity were admitted
to the boys' basketball game at Garrett Gym on February 7,
2009 free of charge. The kids who came
to the game
with a "free" ticket were eligible for a drawing that was
held at the end of the 3rd quarter of the Varsity game. A
basketball, autographed by the SHS basketball team, was
given away to one lucky winner from each elementary school.
The students that won basketballs autographed by the
boys' basketball team were as follows:
Coulston - Christopher Zamora
Hendricks - Hanna Baker
Loper - Jessica George
Shelbyville Central Schools had a total
of 411 students participate from our three elementary
schools with their posters and projects on display during
the game. While we focused on Abraham Lincoln,
celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth, the students
were not limited to that and several of our upper grade
students chose to honor many of our presidents including
George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, George H. W. Bush,
George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The effort of the students
was most impressive and the display was priceless.
This was not a graded project, as the focus was to encourage
families to spend time reading together. A father
commented, "This project got our family back in the
library." Please enjoy the photos below.
