On Friday, October 2,
2009, State Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett and
Mrs. Lee Ann Kwiatkowski, IDOE Director of the Differentiated
Learners Division, along with Sarah Pies and Laura Cope, IDOE
Title I Specialists recognized the students, teachers,
staff and parents of William Loper Elementary School as a
Title I Distinguished School, "Closing the Achievement Gap"
category, during an all-school assembly.
Representatives from Loper
Elementary School will attend the 2010 National Title I
Conference held in Washington, D.C. from January 21-24, 2010 as
part of the Title I Distinguished Schools National Recognition
Program.

Super Loper
State and
local education leaders and elected officials gathered in the
Loper Elementary School gymnasium Friday morning to recognize
something that teachers, staff, students, parents and the entire
Loper community already knew — Loper is a very distinguished
school. In fact, Loper recently was named one of the state’s top
two Title I Distinguished Schools.

Loper's Story:
On
August 26, 2009, Mr. David Adams, SCS Superintendent, received
notification that the IDOE was in the process of selecting
schools for the National Association of State Title I Director’s
Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program. One school
in Indiana would represent the state’s Title I schools that have
exhibited exceptional student performance for two or more
consecutive years. One school would represent the state’s
Title I schools that have made the most progress in
significantly closing the achievement gap between student
subgroups.
The
letter listed William F. Loper Elementary School as an
eligible school for site visits by the IDOE based on the review
of the following criteria:
-
Student Achievement Data (Exemplary Progress);
-
Meets
or Exceeds Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) 2007-2008 and
2008-2009;
-
Poverty Data of 40% or higher;
-
Phone
interviews
Mrs.
Sally Vaught, Loper Principal, participated in a phone interview
with specialists from the office of Title I Academic Support and
agreed, if selected as a finalist, to a site visit in September
and a 500 word school program description.
On
September 1, 2009, Mr. Adams and Mrs. Vaught were notified by
the IDOE of Loper Elementary School's status as a finalist
in the Closing the Achievement Gap between subgroups.
"This
memorandum is to inform you that William Loper Elementary
School has been selected as one of the top 8 Title I schools
to be considered for the National Title I Distinguished Schools
Recognition Program. Congratulations! One of the 8
schools will represent Title I schools that have exhibited
exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive
years and one school will represent the state’s Title I schools
that have made the most progress in significantly closing the
achievement gap between student subgroups. William Loper
Elementary School has been nominated for the “Closing the
Achievement Gap” category.
At which
time, Mrs. Vaught went to work preparing for the site visit by a
team of Title I specialist and writing the program description,
which was to include those components that
were most significant to the school's success, including :
*Curriculum and instruction
*Providing opportunities for all
children to achieve
*Coordination with other programs
*Professional development
*Partnerships with
parents/families/communities
Following the site visit and submission of the program
description, Mr. Adams and Mrs. Vaught received the exciting and
much anticipated news that William Loper Elementary School
had
been selected as the top school in Indiana for the Title I
Distinguished School, "Closing the Achievement Gap" category!
Congratulations to
all the students, teachers, staff members, and parents
at Loper Elementary School! This accomplish is truly a
team effort and
a special recognition to be shared by all in the Loper family!
