Super Loper

State and local education leaders and elected officials gathered in the Loper Elementary School gymnasium Friday morning to recognize something that teachers, staff, students, parents and the entire Loper community already knew — Loper is a very distinguished school. In fact, Loper recently was named one of the state’s top two Title I Distinguished Schools.

Loper's Story:

On August 26, 2009, Mr. David Adams, SCS Superintendent, received notification that the IDOE was in the process of selecting schools for the National Association of State Title I Director’s Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program.  One school in Indiana would represent the state’s Title I schools that have exhibited exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years.  One school would represent the state’s Title I schools that have made the most progress in significantly closing the achievement gap between student subgroups.

The letter listed William F. Loper Elementary School as an eligible school for site visits by the IDOE based on the review of the following criteria:

  • Student Achievement Data (Exemplary Progress);

  • Meets or Exceeds Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) 2007-2008 and 2008-2009;

  • Poverty Data of 40% or higher;

  • Phone interviews

Mrs. Sally Vaught, Loper Principal, participated in a phone interview with specialists from the office of Title I Academic Support and agreed, if selected as a finalist, to a site visit in September and a 500 word school program description.

On September 1, 2009, Mr. Adams and Mrs. Vaught were notified by the IDOE of  Loper Elementary School's status as a finalist in the Closing the Achievement Gap between subgroups.

"This memorandum is to inform you that William Loper Elementary School has been selected as one of the top 8 Title I schools to be considered for the National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program.  Congratulations!  One of the 8 schools will represent  Title I schools that have exhibited exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years and one school will represent the state’s Title I schools that have made the most progress in significantly closing the achievement gap between student subgroups.  William Loper Elementary School has been nominated for the “Closing the Achievement Gap” category.

At which time, Mrs. Vaught went to work preparing for the site visit by a team of Title I specialist and writing the program description, which was to include those components that were most significant to the school's success, including :

                        *Curriculum and instruction

                        *Providing opportunities for all children to achieve

                        *Coordination with other programs

                        *Professional development

                        *Partnerships with parents/families/communities

Following the site visit and submission of the program description, Mr. Adams and Mrs. Vaught received the exciting and much anticipated news that William Loper Elementary School had been selected as the top school in Indiana for the Title I Distinguished School, "Closing the Achievement Gap" category!

Congratulations to all the students, teachers, staff members, and parents
at Loper Elementary School!  This accomplish is truly a team effort and
a special recognition to be shared by all in the Loper family!
