Indiana students were asked in October to help decorate State
Superintendent Reed's holiday "Reading Tree" by recreating a scene
or character from a favorite book or story in the outline of an ornament. All entries were to be received by November 26.
Here's the exciting news...25 Loper students were invited to the
Statehouse on Wednesday, December 19 to see their ornaments displayed on Dr.
Reed's holiday "Reading Tree" and to meet Dr. Reed!
Here's how it happened...Mrs. Rebecca Eberhart, Loper Librarian, and
Mr. Eric Sutton, Loper Art Teacher, teamed together to host a school-wide
(K-5) contest at Loper Elementary School in response to Dr. Reed's request
for students to help decorate the "Reading Tree." This
project integrated both art and reading as students used visual language to
illustrate their favorite text (IN Standard 13: Integrated Studies).
Based on their artistic merit, four ornaments were selected per grade
level out of approximately 630 total entries to represent Loper at the
Indiana Statehouse. Additionally, one Grand Prize Winner, Emily Zheng,
Gr. 3, was chosen as having special artistic quality. The 25 ornaments
were sent to the Statehouse. The efforts of these students were
recognized by a field trip to the Statehouse to see Dr. Reed's "Reading
Tree." While at the Statehouse, Mrs. Eberhart's husband, State
Representative Sean Eberhart, led the students and parents in a tour and
participated in a group picture. As a special honor, Dr. Reed read to
the children in front of the "Reading Tree." The students
also enjoyed the lights of Monument Circle and lunch at the Old Spaghetti
Factory as part of their field trip.
