Eighteen students at Shelbyville High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.3 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Students took AP Exams in May 2006 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams.

At Shelbyville High School, thirteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Aaron Anspaugh, Eric Byrer, Lindsay Conner, Kyle DeWitt, Nicholas Everhart, Ross Green, Amber Knopp, Christine Kramer, David Lennen, Jennifer Plymate, Jordan Schmitt, Brett Snyder, and Brandon Weidner.

Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Rory Bonte, Megan Carmony, Jordan Green, and Matthew Matney.

One student, Leslie Seals, qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Of this year’s award recipients, four are current seniors at Shelbyville High School: Nicholas Everhart, Jordan Green, David Lennen, Leslie Seals, Brett Snyder, and Brandon Weidner. These students have one more year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn another AP Scholar Award.

Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades. In 2006, thirty-five AP Exams were offered in a wide variety of subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free-response (essay or problem-solving).  Shelbyville High School offers 16 AP courses which prepare students to take the AP Exams each May.

Principal Tom Zobel nominated these two promising leaders for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional commitment to their school and communities.

“At Shelbyville High School, we prepare our students for success by encouraging them to develop in all areas of their lives.  Wendy’s High School Heisman is one of the awards we can bestow on our students for their achievements throughout high school,” said Mr. Zobel.

Dana Gardner and David Lennen were nominated for this award based on the following accomplishments:

Dana is an Academic Honors student in the top 2% of her class with an overall GPA of 4.25.  She has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and tennis teams throughout high school.  She has excelled in these sports and her recognitions include receiving a varsity letter and being named to the All HHC Athletic and Academic teams in all three sports.  She was also chosen by the IHSAA to participate in their role model campaign.  In addition, Dana has been involved in a variety of activities both at school and in the community.  At school she has been a member of SADD, student council, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club, and the Ambassador Cross-Age Mentor program.  Dana’s community services projects include Clothe a Child and Kindergarten Christmas as well as volunteering at the St. Joseph festival, elementary volleyball and basketball clinics, and going on a youth mission trip.   Dana was also nominated by the faculty to represent Shelbyville High School as a Hoosier Girls’ State delegate last year.

“These students are the future community leaders,” said Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Memorial Trophy and Wendy’s High School Heisman program spokesperson.  “It gives me great pride to see young people strive for excellence on and off the field.”

For more information or to track a student’s progress in the competition, please log on to www.wendysheisman.com or call 1-800-205-6367.  All nominees will be posted on the Wendy’s High School Heisman Web site in early October of this year.

Created in 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman program, has been celebrating youth excellence for 13 years.  The program consists of five phases – Nomination, State Finalists, State Winners, National Finalists and National Winners.  Entries are initially evaluated by ACT Assessment during the State Finalist and State Winner phases and then passed on to a distinguished panel of judges.

Twelve National Finalists are invited to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities during an all-expense paid trip to New York City on Dec. 8 – 10.  ESPN2 will feature all 12 National Finalists during the Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards Ceremony that airs on Dec. 10.
