Shelbyville parents will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare their
pre-school children for kindergarten at a parent fair, thanks to a grant from
the Vectren Energy Delivery. Vectren representative Curt Poore
presented a $2,500 check, April 7, to Teresa Meredith a T. A. Hendricks Elementary
Teacher who requested the donation and other Shelby Central School
representatives.
At the fair, parents will be able to visit booths to ask questions and
obtain information about important topics to prepare their children for
school, such as child development and how to access community resources,
such as the public library and health department immunizations. For
families in attendance with incoming SCS kindergarten students, backpacks will be provided and will include
materials and suggestions for activities appropriate for pre-kindergarten
children that they can do together at home.
"Because this project targets children younger than school age,
school funds cannot be use," Meredith said. "We appreciate
Vectren's support for helping connect our parents with community resources
for their children to be better prepared to enter school -- ready to
learn. We believe as parents become more aware of resources around
them, they will seek assistance to better prepare their children,
Shelbyville's youngest citizens, to begin their academic careers."
The success of the program will be measure by comparing entry data, such
as health records and beginning assessments, of future incoming
kindergarten students with those of past classes of kindergarten students
whose families did not participate or did not have the parent fair available
to them.
"It became apparent that we could play a role to help enhance
Shelbyville's community through education," Poore said. "We
are please to help Shelbyville Central Schools with this educational
outreach effort to help children grow and learn."
