Tech Tips - Outlook Express blocking too many attachments
Outlook Express is blocking too many attachments on many machines in the district.
There is a new "feature" in the newest version of Outlook Express 6.0 that basically blocks almost all attachments to prevent users from getting viruses. I definitely don't like computer viruses, but Outlook Express is being a little over-zealous and is blocking almost everything.
There is one setting in Outlook Express that needs to be changed in the "Security" settings and the steps to make that change are listed below:
Step #1) Start Outlook Express
Step #2) Go to and open up the "Tools" menu
Step #3) Select "Options" at the bottom of the "Tools" menu
Step #4) A window will appear that has several tabs. Click on the tab labeled "Security"
At the top of the "Security" window you will see a section titled "Virus Protection". You will see a check box that has "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" to the right. You need to make sure there is NOT a check mark in that box. If you see a check mark in that box, click on that box one time to remove that check mark.
Final Step) Click on the "Apply" button to make the changes then click on "OK" to close the window.
That setting seems to be the problem with too many attachments getting blocked. We do have a virus-checking computer that scans all email for viruses and will sometimes block certain attachments. But this Security setting in Outlook Express is far too restrictive and often does not even allow people to send Word documents, PowerPoint files or PDF documents to one another.
If you have problems in changing the Security setting in Outlook Express, leave a work order in the Tech mailbox and one of the techs will come by to help out.
