To Change Display Settings for Windows 98 and Windows XP

To change the display setting for your Windows 98 or XP machine, go to your Start Menu, go up to Settings, and go over and click on Control Panel. The Control Panel folder will then open.

You need to double-click on the Display icon. Once you double-click on the Display icon the Display Properties window then appears, as pictured below.

The Display Properties window you have on your screen may not be exactly like the one we have pictured, but the graphic below gives you the basic idea.

.

Step #1 - Click on the Setting Tab at the top of the Display Properties window. There are quite a few properties you can adjust for your monitor. Explore some of the other options.

Step #2 - Go to the Display Area section. Adjust both sliding buttons to the setting you see illustrated to the right. This will give your monitor a display area of 800 pixels by 600 pixels. (The Display Area section on your computer may look different depending on the settings for your display)

You should also check to make sure your "Colors" setting to be at least High Color (16 bit).  256 colors just does not give you enough color options to display all images correctly.  There are some programs that require 256 colors, if you have one of those programs, the Display Properties window is where you can set your color level.

Step #3 - Go to the bottom of the Display Properties window and select the Apply button.

After clicking on the Apply button, you will receive a warning box informing you that "Windows will now adjust your desktop. This could take a few seconds, during which your screen might flicker. If Windows does not appear correctly, wait 15 seconds, and your original setting will be restored." Click on the "OK" button.

The another smaller warning will appear that states "You resized your desktop. Do you want to keep this setting?" Click on the "OK" button.

You have now resized your Display setting
