Tech Tips - Exporting and Importing Internet Explorer Favorites (Bookmarks)

Exporting Favorites:

1) Run Internet Explorer, and choose Import and Export... from the File menu.

2.) The Import/Export Wizard opening screen will appear, click Next to continue.

3.) You will then be prompted to choose if you would like to Import, or to Export.  Select Export Favorites from the list of available actions, and then click Next.

4.) The next screen will prompt you to choose the folder that contains the favorites you want to export.  Unless you have created subfolders and only want to export one of these, click on Favorites, the top-most folder on the list, and then click Next.

5.)  You will then be prompted to choose where the export file (called bookmark.htm) will be saved.  Choose Browse in order to navigate to the correct destination for the file.

6.) You can choose any location for this file; but for transporting the bookmarks between different computers, the best place to save the export file is on a floppy disk.  Make sure you have a disk in the floppy drive, and select the drive on this screen by clicking in the area to the right of the Save in: prompt, and then clicking on the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon.  The 3½ Floppy (A:) icon should now appear beside the Save in: prompt.  Click on the Save button.

7.)  The Export Favorites Destination screen will come back up; but with A:\bookmark.htm now in the space underneath Export to a File or Address.  Click Next to continue.

8.)  You should then see a screen that informs you that you have successfully completed the Import and Export process.  Click Next to save the file to your floppy disk.

9.) The last screen will inform you if the process completes successfully. Click OK and you are done!

Importing Favorites:

Now, in order to import the bookmarks, we go through a similar process.

1.)  Run Internet Explorer, and choose the Import and Export... from the File menu.

2.)  The Import/Export Wizard opening screen will appear, click Next to continue.

3.) You will then be prompted to choose if you would like to Import, or to Export.  Select Import Favorites from the list of available actions, and then click Next.

4.)  The next screen will ask you for the location of the exported file.  Choose Browse to find the file.

5.)   Put the disk containing the exported favorites file in the floppy drive. Select the floppy drive on this screen by clicking in the area to the right of the Save in: prompt, and then clicking on the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon.

6.)  You should now see the export file "bookmark.htm" in the Select Bookmark File screen.  Double-click on this file.

7.)  You will then return to the Import Favorites Source screen.  Click Next to continue.

8.)  The following screen gives you the choice of where to import your favorites.  Click on the Favorites folder (the top-most folder) and click Next.

9.)  You should then see a screen that informs you that you have successfully completed the Import and Export process.  Click Next to import your favorites.

10.)  If all goes well, you will see the last screen, informing you of success!
